Airflow Is Almost Always the Culprit
A freezing air conditioner is nearly always an airflow problem or a refrigerant problem, and airflow is the more common of the two by a wide margin. The mechanism is straightforward: the evaporator coil is cold, and it needs a steady stream of warm indoor air across it. Reduce that airflow and the coil drops below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and the ice further blocks airflow — a loop that ends with a solid block of ice and no cooling at all.
The usual restrictions, in the order worth checking:
- A dirty filter. The most common cause, and the easiest to rule out.
- Closed or blocked registers. Closing vents raises static pressure and starves the coil.
- A failing blower motor or capacitor. The fan runs, but not at full speed.

- A dirty evaporator coil. Years of dust across the fins restrict airflow at exactly the point where it matters most.
