Where the Losses Actually Are
Most summer-bill advice focuses on thermostat habits, which matter but are rarely the biggest number. In a typical Westchester home the larger losses sit in places nobody looks at.
- Duct leakage. Ducts running through an unconditioned attic or crawlspace leak cooled air into a space nobody occupies. This is frequently the single largest avoidable loss in a house with a ducted system, and no thermostat setting compensates for it. - An oversized system. Air conditioning that is too large cools the air quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out. The house ends up cold and damp, so people drop the setpoint further and pay more for a comfort problem that is really about moisture.
- A dirty coil or filter. Both reduce capacity, so the system runs longer to achieve the same result. Cheap to correct and easy to neglect.
- Low refrigerant charge. A system running under-charged uses more energy for less cooling, and the charge is only low because something is leaking.
Thermostat Strategy That Actually Works
Two things are worth knowing because they contradict common advice:
Setting it much lower does not cool faster. An air conditioner has one output. Setting 65 when you want 74 does not accelerate anything — it just overshoots and runs longer than necessary.
Humidity matters more than temperature. At the same thermostat setting, a house at 45% relative humidity feels significantly cooler than one at 60%. Getting moisture under control often lets you raise the setpoint a couple of degrees and feel no different, which is where real savings live. If your home feels clammy even when the AC is running, that is a system behaviour worth diagnosing rather than a setting to fight.
Setting back while the house is empty genuinely does save, but keep it moderate — around four degrees. Deep setbacks in humid weather let moisture build up, and pulling it back out costs more than the setback saved.
When the Equipment Is the Problem
If bills have climbed year over year with no change in habits, the system is telling you something. Declining efficiency usually means charge, airflow or a component drawing more than it should — all diagnosable.
