Why Spring Beats Summer in Westchester
The practical case for replacing in spring has less to do with pricing than with how the work actually goes.
- You are not deciding under duress. A system that fails in an August heatwave forces you to choose from whatever can be installed this week. That is how homes end up with equipment that was available rather than equipment that was right.
- Sizing can be done properly. A correct replacement starts with a heat-gain calculation for your house — insulation, windows, orientation, square footage. Oversized air conditioning cools quickly but never runs long enough to remove humidity, which is why some homes feel cold and clammy at the same time.
- Ductwork can be assessed and corrected. If some rooms never cooled properly, that is usually a duct problem rather than an equipment problem, and spring is when there is time to fix it rather than work around it.
- Scheduling is yours. In July every contractor in Westchester is running emergency calls, and a planned installation competes with houses that have no cooling at all.
What Proper Sizing Actually Involves
The most common fault we find in Westchester basements and side yards is equipment sized by matching whatever came out. If the original was oversized — and a great many were — the error simply repeats.
A correct assessment looks at the building rather than the old nameplate: how the house is insulated, which walls face the afternoon sun, how much glazing there is, whether the attic is vented, and how the ductwork is actually distributing air. If your home has no ductwork, or ductwork that has never distributed air evenly, replacing like for like may not be the best use of the money.
