A furnace rarely fails without warning. In most cases, there are clear signs something isn’t right—long before your system stops working on the coldest day of the year. Knowing what to watch for can help you avoid emergency breakdowns, unexpected repair costs, and uncomfortable winter nights.
Since 1944, Carey & Walsh Heating & Air Conditioning has helped homeowners across Westchester, Rockland, Putnam Counties, and nearby New Jersey recognize furnace problems early and take action before they become major issues. Here are seven warning signs you should never ignore.

1. Uneven or Inconsistent Heating
If some rooms feel warm while others stay cold, your furnace may be struggling to distribute heat properly. This can be caused by aging components, airflow issues, or a system that’s no longer sized correctly for your home.
A professional evaluation from a trusted local expert offering furnace and heating repair services can identify the root cause and restore consistent comfort. Learn more about Carey & Walsh’s heater repair services.
2. Rising Energy Bills Without Explanation
A noticeable increase in heating costs often signals declining furnace efficiency. As internal components wear down, your system has to work harder to produce the same level of heat.
Scheduling routine service through Carey & Walsh’s heater maintenance program can help improve efficiency and prevent minor issues from turning into major repairs. Visit our page to learn more.
3. Frequent Cycling or Short Cycling
If your furnace turns on and off repeatedly, it may be overheating, dealing with airflow restrictions, or experiencing thermostat issues. Short cycling places unnecessary stress on the system and accelerates wear and tear.
Prompt professional diagnosis can prevent further damage and extend the life of your furnace.
4. Strange Noises During Operation
While some operational noise is normal, loud banging, rattling, or screeching sounds are not. These noises often point to loose parts, motor problems, or ignition issues that should be addressed before they worsen.
Ignoring these sounds can lead to sudden system failure during peak winter conditions.
5. Yellow Pilot Light or Burner Flame
A healthy gas furnace flame should burn blue. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate improper combustion or ventilation problems, which may pose safety concerns for your home and family.
This is a situation where professional furnace repair is essential—never attempt to fix combustion issues yourself.
6. Furnace Is More Than 15–20 Years Old
Most furnaces have a lifespan of 15–20 years. If yours is nearing that range, breakdowns and efficiency losses become more common—even with regular maintenance.
Upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient system through professional heater installation services may provide better reliability and lower energy costs. Explore your options on our page.
7. Your Furnace Needs Frequent Repairs
When repair visits become routine, it’s often a sign the system is nearing the end of its service life. At that point, continued repairs may cost more than replacement over time.
A knowledgeable HVAC professional can help you compare repair versus replacement and choose the most cost-effective solution for your home.

Why Early Action Matters
Ignoring furnace warning signs can lead to:
- Complete system failure during extreme cold
- Higher emergency repair costs
- Reduced energy efficiency
- Potential safety risks
Taking a proactive approach helps protect your comfort, safety, and budget throughout the winter.

What Ignoring These Signs Actually Costs
Every one of the warning signs above is cheaper to address in October than in January, and the reason is not just emergency call-out timing. Small faults cascade.
- A dirty filter restricts airflow, which overheats the heat exchanger, which stresses the metal and shortens its life. A filter is trivial; a heat exchanger is a replacement conversation.
- A failing igniter that still works most of the time is a scheduled visit now and a no-heat emergency on the coldest night of the year later — igniters fail under load, which means they fail when the system is working hardest.
- Short cycling wears every component that starts and stops, and it usually points to something correctable — a control, a filter, or a sizing issue — rather than a furnace at the end of its life.
- Rising fuel bills mean you are already paying for the fault every month. Repairs often pay for part of themselves over a season.
Repair or Replace: How to Decide
Age alone is a poor guide, and we are wary of the rules of thumb the industry repeats. What actually matters:
- What has failed. An igniter, flame sensor, capacitor or control board is a repair on almost any furnace. A cracked heat exchanger is not.
- Whether the system was right in the first place. A furnace that has short cycled its whole life was probably oversized when it was installed. Replacing it with the same size repeats the mistake — which is why we run a heat-loss calculation rather than matching the old nameplate.
- How the rest of the system is doing. Ductwork, venting and controls all have a say. A new furnace attached to leaking ducts in a cold attic will disappoint.
If a replacement genuinely is the right answer, our heating installation page explains how we size and commission systems. If your heat comes from radiators rather than vents, boiler repair and replacement is the relevant page instead — and we repair a great many boilers other contractors have told homeowners to replace.
Get It Looked At Before the First Cold Snap
The pattern is consistent every year: the first genuinely cold night produces more no-heat calls than the rest of the month combined, because systems that were coping marginally stop coping. If your furnace showed any of the signs above last winter, autumn is when to deal with it. Call 914-762-9600 to arrange a visit.
